Originally slated for April 2019, the currently untitled ninth film was recently pushed back a full year and will now be released worldwide on April 20, 2020, which frankly feels like forever away right now.
“I know there has been a lot of speculation as to why the Fast & Furious 9 release date was pushed,” Vin Diesel wrote on Instagram. “But it would be unfair to say it is anyone’s fault.

“Like any vehicle that has run around the globe eight times, the franchise is in need of maintenance. My good friend and the godfather of Universal, Ron Meyer has granted me the time to do just that.”
Since the release of Fast & Furious 8 last year, there have been rumbles of discontent in the Fast & Furious family. The decision to launch a spin-off movie featuring the characters played by Jason Statham and Dwayne Johnson hasn’t gone down well among-st some in the cast, and even during production on Fast & Furious 8, The Rock wasn’t best impressed with Diesel’s attitude to the movie. Happy times.
Furthermore, a familiar face is returning to direct. Justin Lin helmed films three through to six in the series, before jumping off to make Star Trek Beyond. But now Diesel has confirmed that Lin is coming back to the franchise, and he’ll direct both Fast & Furious 9, and following that, Fast & Furious 10.
More About Furious 9
Dwayne Johnson’s future is up in the air, following his on-set spat with Diesel during the filming of the last movie. (The two never actually shot together on The Fate of the Furious.)
Not only that, but Johnson’s character Hobbs appeared to have “retired” at the end of the film. (More on that below.)
Tyrese Gibson (Roman) is a strong possibility, though Gibson did previously vow never to work with Johnson again after the pair began feuding. (See below for all the details of their beef.)
There’s also the chance of returns for Jason Statham (Deckard), Helen Mirren (Magdalene), Luke Evans (Owen), Lucas Black (Sean), Nathalie Emmanuel (Ramsey), Kurt Russell (Mr Nobody) and Scott Eastwood (Eric).
Charlize Theron (Cipher) isn’t sure about her future in the franchise, but it sounds like she’s up for more.
